PG College
Kothagudem School Of Mines (KSM), Kothagudem,Osmania University (1989-1993)
In the year 1986, I joined in erst while APSEB (Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board) on 4th August 1986 after successfully selected in the recruitment test held for the posts of Assistant Engineer. I was posted directly at Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) as Trainee Assistant Engineer. Though initially had an issue with the lack of accomodation in the Quarters, the issue was resolved later. I was alloted a big Quarter finally and I moved in along with my wife. With new job, new place of working and of course with newly married wife, life was beautiful. Had to work in shifts i.e. 8 hours in a day. Rest of the time was free. After had enjoyed the free time for 3 years a good Idea came to my mind to join PTPG (Part Time Post Gruaduation) Course in MTech (Mining Machinery) at the near-by College (Kothagudem School of Mines) after hearing about the facility available for KTPS employees.
The College was about 5 KM distance from Power Station colony. I had purchased new bike YAMAHA RX-100 after the PTPG thought came to my mind. It was weekly 3 days to go to college in the evening between 6 to 9 hours. A group of 5 to 6 people including me joined the Course and used to go regularly. So it was great working and studying at the same time. Totally different subjects all related to Mining Technology.
First Semester examinnations were held in August, 1989 for the Subjects Mining Technology, Advanced Maths, C.P. & N.A, Computer Lab and I secured awesome 71.4%.
Second Semester examinations were held in April, 1990 for the two subjects Winding & Hositing , Open Pit Mechanism. Secured 67.5%.
III Semester examinations were held in November, 1990 for the two subjects Mine Surface Structure & Plant, Conveyors & Haulages and I secured 70% in each subject.
Final IV Semester examinations were held in September, 1991 for the three subjects Electrical Drives, Maintenance Engineering and Electrical Equipment in Mines. Able to secure 70%.
After the four semesters were completed successfully, the major part left was Project Work (Dissertation). Project Guide was Prof K R M Rao sir. With the abled guidance of Prof K R M Rao sir, I could be able to complete the Project Work within fixed 2 years of time and the Project Work was :
Experimental Investigation on Coal Flow Behaviour Through Hoppers & Chutes
The report presents the study on Coal Flowability Characteristics and observation of its behaviour while flowing through the bin hoppers and discharge chutes. Both experimental and theoritical methods of approach have been tried in order to investigate for the rectification of the problems like flow blockages, say Arching-Bridging- Piping etc in Bunkers and Choking in Chutes. Coal samples from three different Coal handling plants, where the above problems appear to be common, are collected and tested on JENIKE FLOW FACTIOR TESTER at various moisture levels. Test results are plotted to derive the different Coal Flow properties i.e. the necessary Flow Function, Flow Factor, Kinematic angle of wall friction, effective angle of internal friction. From these properties, Flow - No-flow Postulation is made and Bin valley angle & Size of the hopper opening are also calculated for the mass-flow bins. Also studied experimentally the Coal flow behaviour for open channel chute of Square cross section for different Chute inclinations. Recommendations are made regarding the dimensions of hopper /bunker and chute for the coal flow which is desirable. Submitted the MTech Thesis books on 25th August 1993.
